Young Filmmakers Camp (Ages 11-17):
This year, we will be running two different weeks of Film
Camp, with both beginner and advanced skill level options
available during each week. Campers may choose between either
week if they only want to learn one skill set, but they
will also have the opportunity to participate in both weeks
in order to learn both skill sets.
Beginner Level:
Your budding Steven Spielberg or Sofia Coppola will learn
the basics of video production using digital camcorders
and editing on Mac computers under the guidance of expert
tutors, led by award-winning British filmmaker Keith
Jefferies.
Each day, campers will work in groups of four or five
(with a tutor for each group) rotating through four of the
main roles in film production: camera operator, sound recordist,
director and actor/presenter. In addition, they'll be learning
to edit using Final Cut Express. As they
rotate through the roles on consecutive days, our campers
will be constantly recording and editing short movies, gaining
proficiency through hands-on experience.
By the end of this introductory week, everyone will have
filmed and edited at least four short movies, in addition
to having the opportunity to script and storyboard their
own productions.
Advanced Level:
If your child has experience using Final Cut Express, or
if they will have participated in the first week of Beginner
Level Film Camp, they will build on their knowledge in the
Advanced Level Camp. Campers' creative skills will be challenged
even further with the choice of making a documentary, short
drama or a music video.
Youngsters will outline their project ideas, plan their
visuals, learn about lip-syncing, staging, art direction
and some animation techniques as they take steps in more
experimental directions to create their own short movies.
Young Filmmakers Camp Screening:
Students' films will be projected on the big screen at the
Michigan Theater at a special FREE Young
Filmmakers' matinee on Saturday, August 9 at 1:00
pm. Students will also be given a DVD of all their

To ensure everyone gets the opportunity for hands-on use
of the video equipment and to keep a low student-tutor ratio,
places are limited to a maximum of 16 campers each week
for the Young Filmmakers Camp. To make sure your child is
assured a place, please contact Alyson Nelson by email at
