Letter from the President

Great stories beg to be told; and true artists are compelled to tell them. Storytellers broaden our minds: they engage, provoke, inspire, and ultimately, they connect us.

The most influential storytellers of our time, the artists of film and theatre, can be vulnerable to commercial pressures. Too often, independent artists are asked to compromise, to sacrifice the unique for the predictable, the challenging for the profitable.

That is why Sundance Institute has been committed for 25 years to encouraging individual artists to tell their stories in their own way. Our artistic development programs bring artists together in a creative community where they can hone their skills and take the risks that often lead to innovation, and our Sundance Film Festival introduces audiences to pioneering new work in independent film.

We have been honored to work with artists who embody the independent spirit and we are grateful to each of them for sharing with us their extraordinary stories and original voices.
