MICHIGAN THEATER TO UNVEIL NEW STATE OF THE ART 3-D

May 20, 2009

With the generous support of Bank of Ann Arbor, the Michigan Theater has added an important new way to see movies – a 4K digital cinema system (the highest motion picture resolution available anywhere) capable of playing state-of-the-art 3-D films.

The first film presentation to benefit from this cutting edge cinema system is the Pixar film UP. Pixar, a division of Disney, is the creator of Toy Story, Wall-E, Finding Nemo and other highly entertaining and acclaimed computer animated films. UP, their brand new release, made its worldwide premiere May 15 as the opening film of the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival. It will begin its run at the Michigan Theater on Friday, May 29.

The new projector was funded by a loan from Bank of Ann Arbor. The projector is Sony's latest theatrical cinema system – the SRX-R220 using Real D 3-D technology. The picture resolution is 4096 x 2160 pixels or 4K, the highest picture resolution currently available. The sound for all the movies at the Michigan Theater is created by industry leader Dolby's six channel stereo surround system. Local audio-visual contractor TeL Systems is coordinating the acquisition and installation of the Sony/Dolby/Real D equipment.

This special presentation of UP at the Michigan Theater will feature organ overtures on the theater's famous Barton Organ and a balloon for each child who attends the film (distributed after the movie) during the opening weekend May 29-31.

The Michigan Theater is Ann Arbor's acclaimed movie palace, known nation-wide for its historic beauty and innovative programming and presentations. Bring yourself and your family to this state-of-the-art presentation in the most magnificent movie theater in Michigan – a perfect movie going experience.

This new equipment and this special event do not represent a shift in the Michigan Theater's programming philosophy. We remain dedicated to presenting the best in contemporary independent and foreign films. However, we are expanding our capabilities in response to an ever-changing market so that we can continue to present the full range of high quality programming that our audience and our members demand.

Tickets for UP are priced at $12, $10 (for children/students/seniors/US Veterans) and $9.50 (for Michigan Theater members). Ticket prices include a $3 surcharge to cover special glasses and royalties. Tickets are available in advance at TicketWeb.com and at the box office 30 minutes prior to show time. Go to the Michigan Theater web site www.michtheater.org for more information, show times and the link to TicketWeb.
