IRANIAN CULTURAL EXPERT WILL HOST PERSEPOLIS MATINEE SUNDAY AT THE MICHIGAN THEATER

February 13, 2008

Experience Persepolis in a unique context on Sunday, Feb 17 at 3pm. UM Associate Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Kathryn Babayan, will introduce the animated story of a young girl coming of age during the Iranian revolution.

After the film, the Iranian history and cultural expert will host an audience Q&A – in all, an unusual opportunity to learn about a closed culture that ranks high in today’s headlines. Professor Babayan studies and teaches on women and Islamic culture.
Persepolis opens Friday, February 15 for a full week run through Thursday, February 21.

Persepolis is the animated true story of an outspoken Iranian girl growing up during the regime change and war in Iran. It was written and directed by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi from Satrapi’s autobiography/graphic novel. Voices of the film mother and daughter are provided by real-life mother and daughter Catherine Deneuve and Chiara Mastroianni. (Rated PG-13. 95 minutes.)
