For the fourth year in a row, readers of The Ann Arbor
News have voted the Michigan Theater the Best Movie Theater.
The News' announcement called the theater "a restored
historic gem." The awards were announced on Dec. 5,
2007.
In its story on the Michigan's winning streak, News reporter
Jenn McKee wrote, "By showing art house fare in a historic
movie palace setting, the Michigan fuses old and new to
create a memorable movie-going experience."
The News also cited Executive Director Russ Collins' participation
in a panel at the Sundance Film Festival and the theater's
award late last year as the Outstanding Historic Theatre
by the League of Historic American Theaters.
"…the details that make the Michigan a longtime
local favorite hangout include the live music that's performed
on a Barton theater organ before and after most performances,
real butter on the popcorn, and ornate décor and
architecture that recalls a glamorous, bygone era,"
McKee wrote.
This award comes on the heels of several other honors: the
Michigan Theater was named to the 2007 4 THE BEST list by
voters on ClickOnDetroit.com in September, and was a finalist
in the Arts Organizations category at the Governor's Arts
Awards in November.
