The 48th Ann Arbor Film Festival will take place March 23th-28th, 2010 at the historic Michigan and State Theaters in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The Ann Arbor Film Festival is the longest-running North American independent and experimental film festival. Founded in 1963, the AAFF was independent before "independent film," serving as a critical forum for filmmakers to show their creative work outside of the studio film industry. Today the festival continues its strongly independent spirit as a premier showcase for bold, visionary, experimental and high-caliber films.

On the short list of comedy's all-time greatest duos, Cheech & Chong have been making people laugh until they cry (or puke) since breaking out in the seventies with immortal routines like "Basketball Jones." Thirty years later, and after releasing classic films like "Up in Smoke," the legends are back on-stage once again.

Tony Award winning musical, AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod -- a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Broken Social Scene were formed in Toronto by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, two musicians with lesser-known, struggling bands. Recruiting various musical friends, they released the mostly instrumental Feel Good Lost in 2001. Their big breakthrough came in 2002 when You Forgot It In People gradually gathered word-of-mouth momentum and enthusiastic reviews from music critics. It's success lay in having inventive musicians focus on a hook-filled pop album, making it both interesting to music geeks and accessible to pop fans. It is now considered one of the best indie-rock records of the decade so far.

One of the true stars to rise from the African continent, Senegalese master musician Baaba Maal has been making music for the world to enjoy for nearly two decades. With releases ranging from contemporary Afropop to expressions of traditional West African music, he has received resounding critical acclaim worldwide. Renowned for his fiery performances by fusing funk, rock, and blues with the beats and melodies of West Africa, Maal has continually reinforced his role as a seminal artist in the world music arena. With nearly constant touring, he has honed and enriched an already phenomenal stage show into an explosion of sound, singing, and dancing. Aside from being a remarkable musician, he is socially conscious and represents the United Nations Development Program as a spokesman on the issue of HIV/AIDS in Africa, committed to the concerns of families, young people, and the future of the continent. “Baaba Maal opened his mouth, and beautiful pearls and lilies and songbirds came flying out. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.” (Michael Stipe, R.E.M.) The opening act for Baaba Maal is NOMO, an Afro-Pop, Fela Kuti-inspired nonet originally formed by U-M School of Music graduates in Ann Arbor.

True to form, Stephen graduated from Western Michigan University with a B.A. in Drama, and found his talent as a comedic songwriter. Whether he’s singing an ode to an ailing grandfather (and the inheritance that his death will bring), breaking up with a girlfriend because of her racial make-up (she’s just “too white”), or opening the door to his mind to let the voices inside his head sing out, Lynch is a self-proclaimed "musician trapped in the body of a comedian." His unique blend of musical based comedy has earned him fiercely loyal fans around the world who live to experience his sold-out live shows, three best-selling CDs and DVDs, and his top-rated Comedy Central Specials.

Dave Mason is one of classic rock’s most underrated artists. The versatile singer, composer, and guitarist co-founded the seminal jazz/jam rock group Traffic in 1967 and proceeded to contribute some of the band’s biggest songs, including “Feelin’ Alright,” “Shouldn’t Have Took More than You Gave,” and “You Can All Join In.” His solo career has included collaborations with Mama Cass Elliott, Delaney & Bonnie and Derek & the Dominos, and has included songs like “Only You Know and I Know,” World in Changes” and many more. In 2004, Dave Mason was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic with bandmates Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and (posthumously) Chris Wood.
Leon Russell has been described by artists from Elvis Costello to Elton John as one of rock's most influential forces: a veritable musician's musician who has repeatedly demonstrated his abilities as an outstanding songwriter, performer and producer. With his unique singing style and keyboard wizardry, his career includes such gems as “Delta Lady,” “This Masquerade,” “Song for You” and “Tight Rope.” He was recruited by George Harrison for the Concert for Bangla Desh in 1971 and his “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” medley was among the highlights of that legendary event.

Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W.H. Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first in 25 years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.
Alan Bennett’s new play is as much about the theater as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.
Bennett is one of the UK’s most prolific and best-loved playwrights, whose work includes The Madness of King George and The History Boys, which both began as plays at the National Theatre and have been made into films.
UMS and the Michigan Theater have joined forces to bring high definition screenings of live theater broadcasts by London’s National Theatre to Ann Arbor. In the US, these screenings are delayed broadcasts to accommodate the time difference. Broadcasts will also feature behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with actors.

Sometimes you've got to go home to find yourself. That's what the Goo Goo Dolls (currently consisting of John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin) discovered when they began writing songs for Let Love In, the band's eighth album. Since forming in 1986, the Goo Goo Dolls have evolved from a scrappy punk-influenced trio into the platinum-selling, chart-topping act behind such radio staples as "Name," "Iris," "Slide," and "Here is Gone." As of 2009, the band has sold more than nine million records in the United States alone.
